In the aftermath of the violent floods which afflicted several Upper Egyptian Governorates during October 1994, CIB immediately responded to this national crisis by donating one and a half million pounds to the emergency fund established to provide relief to the victims and aid towards rebuilding their homes and villages.
On October 12, 1992, Egypt was hit with a major earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake was in Fayoum province lying approximately 100 kilometers west of Cairo. The impact was devastating in terms of both human and material losses as Egypt has not historically been an earthquake prone country. The earthquake resulted in large-scale destruction of properties mostly in the Greater Cairo area, particularly affecting older structures in the city's traditional quarters.
As a part of its ongoing commitment to charitable and community service activities, CIB immediately contributed to the cash relief funds raised by the Government of Egypt to support victims of the earthquake. The Bank also financed the reconstruction of two elementary schools in the Greater Cairo area to enable young children to rapidly resume their studies with minimum disruption in a safer environment.
CIB has on several occasions sponsored internationally renowned artists to show in Egypt. In a brief that such a pioneering institution has a role to play in the educational and cultural improvement of the Egyptian people, CIB has sponsored the Bolshoi, Opera Aida, the American Dance Theatre and many renowned cultural events.
Senior Management had taken the decision that yearly gifts or presents would be replaced by assistance in a sectors of the society where support is needed. An ambulance was give as a present to Giza Governorate, a kidney dialysis machine was purchased on behalf of a needy hospital in Cairo.
