CIB received the “Pan-Africa Award for Corporate Social Responsibility” from EMEA Finance, in recognition of the Bank’s efforts and attempts to create a better environment for its staff, customers and the wider Egyptian society. The award highlights the activities set and implemented by the CIB Foundation, Sustainability Development Department and CIB Brand Department.
With the establishment of the CIB Foundation in 2010 and the Bank’s Sustainability Department in 2013, and the continuous CSR activities of the CIB Brand department, the Bank shows no sign of slowing down, or resting on its laurels. In the trying economic times Egypt has found itself in, CIB has pushed its CSR agenda forward, and has committed more resources than ever to ensure its operations are sustainable economically, socially and environmentally.
This has led to the institutionalization of sustainable thinking across all segments of the Bank, embedding sustainability issues into the Bank’s core operations. Most notably, in the last quarter of 2013, CIB took active measures to reformulate its mission and vision in order to reflect its commitment to sustainability.
Speaking about the CSR role of CIB Foundation, established in May 2010 as a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing health services for underprivileged children, CIB allocated 1% of the Bank’s net annual profit (roughly EGP 20 million in 2010) to the Foundation. CIB was and is the only Bank in Egypt that has integrated into its policies the allocation of a specific net profit percentage to its Foundation. After two years of operations, the allocation was increased to 1.5%, totaling approximately EGP 35 million in 2014 to put towards long-term, sustainable development programs in the Egyptian community.
In 2013, CIB established the Sustainability Development Department with the full support of senior management. The launch of this department was accompanied by an integral support system throughout the different levels of the organization, ensuring buy-in from all stakeholders. This was done with the creation of Green Team environmental champions from across various departments and the establishment of a senior management-led Steering Committee and Advisory Board, which acts on behalf of the Board for all sustainability-related matters.
Furthermore, CIB Brand department has undergone several activities in the CSR field including reaffirming CIB’s partnership with Enactus (formerly Students in Free Enterprise), a university program which supports entrepreneurship, as well as establishing a partnership with the American University in Cairo (AUC) to develop the CIB Endowed Professorship in Banking program. CIB has also entered into a five-year partnership with KidZania, where the Bank has a mini branch as a simulation for children to develop their financial skills. Another partnership was sealed with IMAX Theater, allowing underprivileged children to attend five pre-booked and dubbed educational films shown in IMAX theaters. More CSR activities are organized in the field of arts and sports.
